Brand Characters

One of the best brand character(s) out there that I absolutely adore, are the m&ms. They are so cute and I want to eat them all the time. The milk chocolate M & M and the Yellow Peanut Chocolate M& M remind me of two high school buddies that are best friends and still best friends post high school. LIke Cheech and Chong
So it was aways red and yellow that were up to no good. Now there is a whole family of M&M's. Orange, Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue and CRISPY!! he is dark yellow . I LOVE HIM.. he's always so paranoid. hahaha
Im pretty sure Yellow and Green were introduced in 1982. They are always doing silly things, well especially Yellow because he is a NUT, and getting M&M's message across clearly, and with personality, flavour, taste and humour!
GREEN! the lovely miss green made her debut in 1997. She "melts for no one" I love her. She is now the face of M&M's new campaign for the cure for cancer. What a sweet heart she is. Always thinking of others. And very beautiful eye lashes. I wish I had her eye lashes.

Hi I was writing this yesterday, and had to save it becuase I was too hungry to finish. So, last night at around 11:30pm I was craving chocolate. So I made my way down to the closet 24 hour corner store, which was Mac's, and checked out the chocolate selection. The shelves were packed with M&M products and I was in heaven!! I saw Yellow there, Green, Red, Blue and I said "Hello buddies!! Which one of you do I want to eat?" So I went for a kind of M&M's that I have never had before... peanut butter M&M's. I totally recommend them for a treat.

Another reason why I love these character's so much is well yes, there is an m&m in everyone, but they love themes. I mean, they were totally into the whole Star Wards thing, they love dressing up for Christmas, they go pastel during easter, AND they were named the official Candy of the new millennium.

The M&M characters are part of my life. I love seeing them in the store and cannot resist eating them all up because they are so lovable and super tasty.

check out their site. It tells you all about the characters, M&M's history, their candies and much more. just google it. =)  The site is fun, interactive, informative and you can even make your own M&M character! HOW Neat!!!

That all sounds pretty cool and all but M&Ms have no individuality as characters. They lack that pull to make you stop what you are doing and watch their new ad. All I hear is the red one nagging at the yellow one, mildly reminding you of a Bert and Erny skit, without the funny, and them just promoting whatever knew "shtick" is happening... like the Shrek movie, Star Wars for example... Christmas time.. all of these promotional packages that never really win you shit, M&Ms are sales sluts and lost their novelty BEFORE the millenium, that's why they are the Candy of the Millenium. It was all downhill from there...

What makes the m&m characters so fabulous and appealing is that they are so versatile. All of the characters connect with numerous target audiences, this includes;
Green, the sexy lady and she knows it m&m who are confident, "I melt for no one"
Orange, the paranoid who thinks everyone is out to get him, "im a dead man"
Yellow, the silly laid back guy, "there's a little nut in everyone,
Blue, the guy that always keeps his cool, "never let 'em see you melt, and
red, who is confident because he tastes way better than a smarty, "Give me a break" attitude - he doesn't take shit from anyone.

Now that you have met the characters, which one do you relate to the most? To see what colour you feel the most likely to be drawn to, check out the meaning of colours from a psychological perspective.

M&M's are also so versatile for when it comes to sponsoring popular cultured movies, holidays, and or national celebrations (causes), the m&m characters get "into character" tastefully and successfully.

Although m&m's may not evoke intelligence, violence, discrimination, negativity, controversy and/or political issues in their advertisements, they do not need to.
Non of that should be on your mind when it comes to picking something satisfying to fix your craving for chocolate.

The Internet has become an extremely competitive place for gaining users attention, market-share, and being the trend setter for newly invented interactive advertisement.
Viral Marketing/advertising is the new "traditional advertising"
Just like "red & yellow" are the new Cheech & Chong

Check out the m&m website. it says it all.

Suddenly I'm craving peanut butter M&M's and Ritz crackers. Nice blogging (should probably watch the profanity) and interesting personal brand observations. By the way, the new Ritz crackers are a brand extension (and also a product extension, but a product extension that carries an existing brand name). Your mark is 10/10.
P.S. Which M&M am I?

You know, that is a really good argument. I can admit I liked the orange one when it first came out, because of its originality. I just don't like the writers of the commercials. The jokes are awful! They're not even like the Juicy Fruit awfulness, they're just boo off stage annoying.

And that's why I like Smarties, eat the red ones last. Mmm Mmm. Since I was a kid. I thought they made me smarter, it was the best argument to get my parents to buy them for me!

The M&Ms characters, are for a more mature audience. Smarties are so much more fun and youthful. Best campaign for similar tasting candy ever.

So for me, Jayne, you'd definitely be the purple Smartie, my favourite!

And the purple one can be anything it wants to be lol...
